Giropay Deprecation

Giropay has been deprecated as a payment method on 30th of June. It is no longer available as of July 1st, 2024.

Background
Giropay is a bank transfer payment method available for buyers in Germany. Giropay is owned by Paydirekt GmbH, which is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank. Paydirekt GmbH operates as a joint venture between major German banks.

What’s changing?
Paydirekt deprecated Giropay as an alternative, ecommerce payment method.

Businesses currently offering Giropay are encouraged to use the following payment methods instead:

  • PayPal: globally, over 400 million customers use PayPal to pay for their transactions online and in Germany, more than 31 million customers trust PayPal. Their PayPal wallet already includes the capability to pay PayPal transactions directly via bank funding. In addition, our Seller Protection* helps guard against losing money to claims, chargebacks, and reversals. You're covered for the total purchase amount on all eligible transactions**.

Additionally, your customers can pay with the following pay by bank solutions:

  • Pay by Bank via Trustly

You will find a list of available payment options on this page: https://developer.paypal.com/docs/checkout/apm/

When do these changes take effect?
Giropay for businesses:

  • Effective July 1st, 2024 Giropay is no longer available as a payment method for all businesses. This also applies to Partners, who should also stop offering Giropay to their merchants.
  • No extensions will be provided.

Am I impacted by the deprecation if I am an existing merchant who already accepts Giropay?
Yes, existing merchants who already accept Giropay will not be able to continue processing Giropay payments after June 30th, 2024. We recommend that you start migrating to the alternative options listed above to ensure least interruption to your business.

What action do I need to take?
The required actions might vary based on your integration.

If you are a Partner, you’ll need to do the following to prevent disruption to your business:

  • Update your code to prevent businesses using your platform/plugin/app to turn on Giropay as a payment method.
  • You may also need to update your own support and integration documentation and train impacted teams on the deprecation.

If you are a merchant integrated via a partner:

  • Your partner will be removing Giropay***.

If you are a direct merchant, migrate your customers to PayPal wallet by:

What happens if I do not take action?

  • Partners: If you do not take action to stop businesses from enabling Giropay, Giropay may appear on your business’ checkout and/or their settings page as an enabled payment method. However, if a buyer chooses to check out with Giropay, an error message will be surfaced, which will lead to a poor buyer experience.
  • Direct merchants: If you do not take action to disable Giropay, Giropay may appear on your checkout page as an enabled payment method. However, if a buyer chooses to check out with Giropay, an error message will be surfaced, which will lead to a poor buyer experience.
